The practice I wish existed when I was starting out

I set up MindSure because I wanted to build the practice I wish I'd had access to as a contractor. One where referrals were genuinely handled, admin was off my plate, and the technology worked with me instead of against me.

Most of all — a practice where psychologists were trusted to do excellent clinical work, without having to hustle for clients on the side. We've all been pitched the "meet with local GPs to build your own caseload" model. It's not what good psychologists should have to spend their time doing.

Which is also why I'm growing MindSure slowly and deliberately. I'm looking for one or two psychologists I can genuinely back — support properly, grow with, and know by name. If that sounds like the kind of place you've been looking for, let's have a conversation.

Small by design

You'll work directly with the principal. Real autonomy over your practice, real access to the person making the decisions, and an environment where doing excellent clinical work is the whole point.

Built so you can focus on clinical work

Four things that genuinely set MindSure apart from most Central Coast psychology jobs — in the actual details, not the marketing.

70/30 split — meaningfully more generous

You keep 70% of every session you bill — a more generous contractor split than the industry average.

If you're currently on a 60/40 split, moving to 70/30 typically means tens of thousands more per year. See the calculator below.

Clients waiting — not a caseload to build

You shouldn't have to drum up your own enquiries or run ads for yourself on the side. We handle client acquisition and onboarding — so your first week looks like your tenth.

If enquiries aren't flowing through to your diary, that's our problem to solve, not yours.

Clinical focus — not admin

We use Zanda Health — genuinely beautiful practice management software that handles Medicare claiming, rebates, invoicing, reminders, and client communications automatically.

Our admin team covers enquiries, bookings, rescheduling, and the daily logistics. Spend your time in session — not fighting clunky software.

Fully-funded supervision for Clinical Registrars

Choose your own Board-approved supervisor — we pay. Plus structured peer consultation with me (and other psychologists as the team grows), and a case mix that supports your registrar competencies.

Finish your program without picking up the supervision tab, and without being boxed into whatever in-house modality the clinic happens to offer.

See the difference in real dollars

If you're currently on a 60/40 split, moving to 70/30 typically means tens of thousands more each year — and serious compounded earnings over the length of a career.

For Clinical Registrars

Finish your registrar program without picking up the supervision tab

Most clinics offer in-house supervision — which locks you into whatever modality the supervisor happens to use. We think registrars should have a genuinely free choice of supervisor, and shouldn't have to fund it themselves.

So at MindSure, registrar supervision is fully funded. You pick a Board-approved supervisor whose style and specialisation fit where you're heading as a clinician, and we pay. Simple.

What you get as a Registrar
  • Fully-funded external supervision
Your choice of Board-approved supervisor. We cover the cost.
  • Structured peer consultation
Regular clinical case review with James (and the wider team as we grow).
  • A case mix that supports your competencies
We'll work with you on the mix of presentations you need for the program.
  • Flexible days that fit around your life
Full-time, part-time, or a shift pattern that works around other commitments.
  • 70% split from day one
Same split as senior psychologists. No graduated rates.

What you're probably wondering

The questions psychologists most often ask when considering the move — answered directly.

170/30 sounds unusually generous — what's the catch?
No catch. The structure is owner-operator, not corporate — lower overhead passed on to you. I still see clients each week, so decisions about what the practice actually costs to run are grounded in reality rather than optimised for a margin target.
2Will I actually get clients — or do I need to build my own caseload?
You don't build your own caseload. Client acquisition is our job, not yours — we handle enquiries, intake, and onboarding so you can focus on clinical work. Meeting GPs on weekends to drum up referrals isn't part of the arrangement, and never will be.
3Will I still have autonomy over how I practise?
Completely. You choose your modalities, your session structure, and your caseload mix. Evidence-based practice is the only expectation — beyond that, you're trusted as the clinician you are. Shift patterns (morning, or afternoon/evening) we'll work out together so the rooms run smoothly.
4What if my diary doesn't fill up quickly?
We don't let that happen. There's an active onboarding plan — prioritised enquiry routing to you, a prominent profile on our website, and a clear ramp-up in your first weeks. If diary health slips, we fix it; you don't carry that stress.
5Do I have to do my own invoicing, Medicare, follow-ups?
No. Zanda Health handles claiming, rebates, and invoicing automatically at time of payment. Our admin team handles anything Zanda doesn't. You spend your time in session — not chasing unpaid invoices.
6What about professional indemnity and ABN?
As a contractor, you'll need your own ABN and professional indemnity cover (standard across the industry). It's more straightforward than it sounds — we'll guide you in the right direction and help you get it sorted before your first session.
7I've been burnt by recruitment promises before. How is this different?
Fair concern. Two practical differences: the principal is a working psychologist (I still see clients each week — I plan to for the rest of my career), and I came to psychology after several years working as a Chartered Accountant and at large international organisations including KPMG and Moody's. The business side of MindSure is handled with that same care. Anything in writing here is what you'll experience.
8Can I work part-time — or across both locations?
Yes to both. We're flexible on days and happy to split your time between Gosford and Hornsby however works for you. Part-time is welcome, full-time is welcome — what matters most is the fit.

Beaches, bushwalks, and space to breathe

Gosford is 75 minutes from Sydney CBD on the M1, with direct trains running all day (and the ride itself is a surprisingly beautiful one, hugging the Hawkesbury). If you're already on the Coast, the clinic is centrally placed — a short drive from Terrigal, Avoca, Kincumber, Erina, Woy Woy, and further north. If you're commuting up from Sydney, or thinking of making the move altogether, the quality-of-life shift is meaningful.

Housing is markedly more affordable. The beach is twenty minutes from the clinic. Commutes are measured in minutes, not hours. And the referral base here is underserved — which means steady, sustainable demand for good psychologists.

Who you'd be working with

I'm a Registered Psychologist and Clinical Psychology Registrar. I've worked across Queensland Health, Aurora Healthcare, Griffith University Psychology Clinic, and private practice in Sydney, the Gold Coast, and the Central Coast. I've also been on the contractor side of a busy multi-psychologist clinic — a large part of why MindSure is structured the way it is.

Before psychology, I spent several years working as a Chartered Accountant and then as a credit analyst at large international organisations including KPMG and Moody's. That background is reflected in how the business side of MindSure — splits, billing, tech, admin — is handled: carefully, not casually.

I'm still very much a working clinician — I see clients each week and plan to for the rest of my career. You can read more about my background and clinical approach on my bio page.

MindSure is my attempt at building the kind of practice I'd want to work at as a contractor — and the kind I think good psychologists deserve.

— James

You choose the work you do

You're not slotted into a caseload. You decide what you take on, what you say no to, and which modalities you use. MindSure covers a wide range of adult work — plus children, adolescents, and formal assessments where a clinician is trained for them. Some of the areas we see regularly:

This list isn't the limit. Want to work with children or adolescents? Please bring that. Conduct cognitive, ADHD, or learning assessments (WISC, WAIS, and similar)? Bring that too. Clinicians with experience outside what I already cover are especially welcome. Before you onboard, tell us the work you'd most like to do, and we'll do our best to route it your way.

Trained in something else evidence-based — schema therapy, CFT, EFT, IFS, or otherwise? Bring it. We back clinicians who are good at what they do.

What we're looking for

We're less interested in a particular niche than in finding thoughtful, reliable psychologists who care about doing excellent clinical work — and who want a practice environment that actually supports it.

If you're close but not quite — reach out anyway. The right fit matters more than the checklist.

  • Full AHPRA registration as a Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Psychology Registrar, or General Psychologist
  • ABN and professional indemnity cover (we'll guide you in the right direction)
  • Medicare provider number
  • Flexible minimum commitment — we'll work around your availability
  • Commitment to evidence-based, ethical clinical practice
  • Ability to build warm, genuine therapeutic relationships
  • Valid NSW Working With Children Check (if seeing under 18s)

Common questions

Things psychologists often want clarified before a first conversation.

What's the contract arrangement?

Independent contractor — you operate under your own ABN and are responsible for your own clinical care. MindSure provides the facilities, administrative support, and referral stream. Your clients are your clients.

What's the minimum time commitment?

Flexible. Two days per week is a comfortable baseline, but we're open to less for the right fit. What matters most is that the arrangement works for both of us — we're happy to talk through options.

Can I set my own hours, including evenings and weekends?

Yes — within reason. Consulting rooms are available across weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Evening and weekend slots tend to have strong demand, so those diaries fill faster.

Can I offer telehealth as well?

Yes. Most clients prefer in-person, but telehealth is welcome where it suits the client and the work. Zanda Health has secure video integration built in.

What if I have existing clients I'd like to bring?

Very welcome — existing therapeutic relationships stay yours, and we handle the admin side of getting them set up in our systems.

One thing worth checking first: some contractor agreements have restrictive clauses about transferring clients. If yours does, flag it when we chat and we'll work through it with you.

How quickly could I start?

Typically within a few weeks of an initial conversation, once your ABN, indemnity, and provider numbers are in order. We'll move at whatever pace suits you — nothing is rushed.

Am I expected to take every referral?

No. You're entirely selective about who you take on. If a referral isn't a fit for your scope, interests, or capacity, you pass — no questions. Your clinical judgement is the priority.

What supervision is available for registrars?

Fully funded external supervision with a Board-approved supervisor of your choice. Plus structured peer consultation with James. This is a genuine differentiator — most clinics limit registrars to in-house supervision only.

Do you offer NDIS and private health work?

Yes to both. NDIS (therapeutic supports) is an active part of our work — plan-managed and self-managed clients. Private health claiming is handled through Zanda directly. You're welcome to see any client type you're credentialed for.

What's the application process like?

Deliberately simple. Send through a short message — a CV is welcome if you have one handy, but not required — and we'll set up a proper conversation in person or over video. No panel interviews, no trial presentations, no drawn-out process.
