A psychologist who actually gets it
I'm James Wightman — a registered psychologist helping adults work through anxiety, OCD, depression, trauma, and stress. Sessions available within days, not months.
James Wightman · MClinPsych (Dist.), BPsych (Hons I), MAPS

Warm, structured, and built around you
No generic worksheets. No sessions that feel like small talk. Here's what therapy actually looks like.
First, I listen
I want to understand what's going on, how you're feeling, what you've already tried, and what's been keeping things stuck. You'll feel heard — not rushed through an intake checklist.
Then, we build a plan
Together, we'll build a clear picture of what's driving the problem and agree on what therapy will focus on. No jargon, no ambiguity — just a clear direction forward.
Then, we do the work
I draw on CBT, EMDR, ACT, DBT, and other exposure-based approaches — tailored to your goals, values, and what actually fits your life. You'll leave each session with something practical.
"I've also experienced anxiety myself, and CBT was what helped me work through it — which is part of why I do this work, and why I trust the approaches I use. The goal is meaningful change — not just short-term relief."

Choosing a psychologist is personal
In this short video, I share how I work, what to expect in sessions, and how I aim to create a space that feels safe, collaborative, and genuinely helpful.
Most clients come to feel more in control of their thinking, less caught up in avoidance, and more able to do the things that actually matter to them.
Two locations. Evening, afternoon & weekend appointments.

A few things people commonly ask before starting therapy with James.
What is it like to work with James?⌃
Sessions are warm and collaborative, but also structured. James focuses on helping you feel understood, then translating that into practical, evidence-based steps you can apply in day-to-day life.
You won't be judged or pushed. The pace is steady, and the goal is meaningful change — not just short-term relief.
What concerns does James most commonly help with?⌃
James supports adults with anxiety (including social anxiety and generalised anxiety), panic attacks, OCD, phobias, depression, trauma & PTSD, stress & burnout, and autism-related challenges.
If you're unsure where you fit, that's okay — the first session can clarify what's going on and what approach is likely to help.
How quickly can I get an appointment?⌃
Most clients book within 2–7 days, often in the same week. You can check live availability and book directly online, or call if you prefer.
Do I need a referral?⌃
No. You can self-refer and book without a referral. A GP Mental Health Treatment Plan is only needed if you'd like to claim Medicare rebates.
What happens in the first session?⌃
The first session is about clarity and direction. James will ask about your current difficulties, what you've tried, what's been keeping things stuck, and what you want to change.
You'll leave with a clear plan for what therapy will focus on — and whether the approach feels like a good fit.
My GP referral is addressed to another psychologist — is that okay?⌃
Yes — that's completely fine. As long as your Mental Health Treatment Plan is current, you can attend sessions at MindSure and claim Medicare rebates regardless of the name on the referral.
Do you offer in-person and telehealth?⌃
Yes. In-person sessions are available in Gosford and Hornsby, and telehealth is available for adults across the Central Coast and wider Australia. You choose what works for you.
Is James the right psychologist for me?⌃
Fit matters. James tends to be a strong match for people who want a calm, non-judgemental space alongside structured, evidence-based strategies and clear goals.
If you're unsure, that's normal — the first session can help you decide with no pressure to continue.
