How to make a referral (with a Mental Health Treatment Plan)

Patients wishing to access Medicare rebates through the Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative will require a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). Referrals may be made by a GP or psychiatrist and do not need to specify a specific individual psychologist.

For smooth processing, please include:

• Patient details (name, DOB, address)

• Presenting issues, symptoms, or diagnosis

• Confirmation that a Mental Health Treatment Plan has been completed (this is helpful for us to obtain, though not a Medicare requirement)

• Current medications

• Number of sessions requested for the initial course of treatment (up to 6)

• Referrer details: provider number, signature, and date

What to expect after referring a patient

• First course – Patients are typically referred for up to 6 sessions.

• Progress update – After these sessions, we provide you with a written report outlining assessment findings, therapy focus, and patient progress.

• Further treatment – If appropriate, you may approve an additional course of up to 4 sessions (10 rebated sessions per calendar year in total).

• Beyond 10 sessions – Patients are welcome to continue therapy on a private basis.
