Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR): Reprocessing the Past, Reclaiming the Present
Overview
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based treatment designed to help people recover from distressing or traumatic experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR focuses on helping the brain reprocess memories that have become “stuck,” so they no longer trigger the same emotional or physical distress.
How It Works
During EMDR, the therapist guides you to recall aspects of a difficult memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—usually through eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. This process helps the brain integrate the memory in a more adaptive way, reducing emotional intensity and promoting a sense of resolution.
Over time, these memories lose their emotional charge, allowing you to experience greater calm, confidence, and emotional balance.
When It Helps
EMDR is recommended by organisations such as the World Health Organization and the Australian Psychological Society for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s also increasingly used for anxiety, panic attacks, depression, phobias, and distress linked to past experiences.
